When construction for the new Hobsonville Point Secondary School began in 2012, Hot Water Heat Pumps Limited was delighted to find out they would be manufacturing the equipment that would provide hot water heating throughout the school. Specified in the installation tender document by global building engineers Aecom, the Auckland based heat pump manufacturer made a bespoke system for the school.
Redevelopment necessitates new breed of school
Hobsonville Point Secondary School is a newly opened state co-educational secondary school located in the Auckland suburb of Hobsonville. State-of-the-art buildings provide schooling for students from new homes being built on the former RNZAF airbase, as well as the wider Hobsonville/West Harbour area. By 2018, the school will accommodate up to 1,500 students.
Reducing power bills and wasted energy
Kevin Trigg, Sales and Marketing Director at Hot Water Heat Pumps Limited says, “When engineers at Aecom consulted with us on the school’s requirements, we recommended a reliable hot water heating system that was powerful enough to constantly provide hot water all year round without costing the earth to run.” Having previously worked on construction for the Hobsonville Point Primary School, the team at Hot Water Heat Pumps Limited specified:
One 7GD60-3 heat pump to maintain 60°C water in the cylinders
Installed on top of the school’s roof by local firm Hanlon Plumbing, the tanks are maintained up to 60°C while the ring main return is kept above 60°C. Trigg comments, “With such large tanks, an energy efficient heating solution is more important than ever to reduce wasted energy and keep power bills down to a minimum. The heat pump extracts heat energy out of the air and puts it into the water. This means that on average, the running costs for this system should be two thirds of those of an alternative heat source.”
